YInMn Project

What exactly is “new music”? Ask ten people and you’ll probably get ten answers, because everyone seems to have different opinions, tastes, and ideas about what constitutes contemporary classical music these days.

The fact is that, regardless of stylistic differences, all recently composed “new music” is influenced by 21st-century culture, whether that reflect technological developments, multiculturalism, or the blending of past traditions. The YInMn (or “in-min”) Project showcases the breadth of styles new music can constitute, bringing awareness of contemporary classical music to new audiences through interactive, intimate, and visually oriented festival experiences. The project harkens back to its namesake—YInMn Blue—a newly discovered pigment whose arresting, vivid color has an effect not unlike the bright timbre, striking quality, and exciting nature of so much contemporary music.

The YInMn Project was launched in June 2018 as a day-long performance festival in Atlanta, GA, hosted by Whitespace Gallery. In 2019, the festival will return to Atlanta while also making its first appearance in Ann Arbor, MI at Bløm Meadworks.

Great Danger, Keep Out

Room 1078 closes YInMn 2018’s final set with Matthew Browne’s “Great Danger, Keep Out” (2013), an electrifying piece inspired by Nikola Tesla and his famed inventions.
